How does the PoE power supply work?

When switches or other devices without power supply function are connected to powered devices (such as IP cameras, wireless APs, etc.), PoE power supply can provide power and data transmission support for these powered devices at the same time, and the transmission distance can be up to 100 meters. Generally speaking, PoE power supply device first converts AC power into DC power, and then supplies power to low voltage PoE terminal equipment.

How do I use a PoE power supply?

In this part, we mainly take the IP camera supporting PoE (or other PoE terminal devices) as an example to explain how to use PoE power supply and non PoE switches together to power it. The equipment to be prepared includes: several IP cameras, several PoE power supplies (the number shall be determined according to the number of IP cameras), a standard non PoE switch and several network cables (Cat5eCat6Cat6a).

1. First test all the devices to ensure that the IP camera, PoE power supply and camera management system can operate normally. Before installing the camera, complete the network configuration related to the camera in advance.

2. After the first step is completed, use a network cable to connect the camera to the electrical port of the PoE power supply.

3. Next, install the camera in a place with sufficient light to make the picture captured by the camera clearer.

4. Connect the data transmission ports of the switch and the power supply unit with another network cable.
