How to Improve PoE System's Energy Efficiency?

Apr. 21, 2022

“The Net Zero Carbon Buildings Commitment (the Commitment) challenges businesses, organizations, cities, states, and regions to reach net-zero carbon in operation for all assets under their direct control by 2030, and to advocate for all buildings to be net-zero carbon in operation by 2050.”

–World Green Building Council

It seems that this initiative and the PoE industry have different goals, but in fact, they are closely related. We can reduce carbon emissions by reducing power system losses besides increasing clean energy and reducing fossil fuels. PROCET is working towards a global net-zero carbon goal. How to reduce energy loss in PoE systems and improve energy utilization efficiency? There are mainly the following two aspects:

1. Select a PoE Injector with a Higher Energy Efficiency Level

What is an Energy Efficiency Level? It is launched by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the maximum energy consumption of electrical products during operation and no-load. There are currently 6 energy efficiency ratings now. The United States requires that all power supply equipment entering the market must meet energy efficiency Level VI, the highest level. The European Union, Australia and other countries also have their own specific regulation. Therefore, energy efficiency Level VI is not only of great significance for reducing global carbon emissions, but also the key to product entry into the market.

Serious energy loss not only causes economic losses but also increases the temperature of the PoE injector, which will seriously affect the rate of network transmission. PROCET's newly launched EN15G-6 15.4W PoE injector fully complies with the US Energy Efficiency Level VI. Its energy loss is below 0.1W when working or no-load, a good PoE injector choice for environmental protection and energy-saving!

2. Use Network Cables With a Low Resistance value

In addition to the energy loss inside the PoE injector, the PoE network cable is also a source of energy loss. The metal resistance inside the cable is an important factor affecting the energy loss of the network cable. Therefore, a cable with small resistance is necessary.

Therefore, when we choose the network cable for PoE transmission, we should choose Cat5e and higher grade network cables made of oxygen-free copper. Of course, the above mentioned is the resistance of the network cable when the power supply distance is 100 meters.  when the actual power supply distance is less than 100m, the corresponding loss will also be reduced.
