PoE Switch Data Packet Dropout-Unstable Power Supply?

Mar. 07, 2022

PoE switches have been widely used in the industry, from electrical ports to optical ports, 100M to 10G, managed and unmanaged, etc., and the differences between various ports. To choose a suitable switch, a comprehensive consideration is needed. In a huge video surveillance system, it is necessary to integrate the number of cameras, camera resolution, bit rate, frame number, and other parameters to determine the matching switch. In the process of video monitoring, data packet dropout and unstable power supply of the device will directly lead to the phenomenon of the blurred screen and freeze on the monitoring screen. There are many reasons for this, so today, we will find solutions to these problems.

Case 1: The PoE switch is misconfigured! We all know that the PoE switch power transmission distance can reach up to 100 meters, but at the construction site, in order to ensure stable data transmission, experienced engineers will choose a distance of no more than 80 meters. When the transmission distance reaches 90 meters, 100 meters or more, the data transmission will be greatly reduced, and even packet dropout will occur. To solve this problem, the PoE switch configuration should select the fiber port - Gigabit transmission. The optical fiber port transmission distance of PROCET's industrial-grade optical fiber PoE switch is 50KM, which will directly break the transmission limit of 100 meters and ensure that the video data is transmitted from the field to the control center without reducing the signal quality.

Case 2: Wrong PoE switch power selection. When choosing a PoE switch for a camera, the total power supply is very important. If the power is too low, the device will not work normally, resulting in an unstable power supply. So when the camera needed power is 12W max, configure an IEEE802.3af standard switch. when the HD dome power needs 30W max, the IEEE802.3at standard PoE switch should be used. For higher power PDs, the IEEE802.3bt standard should be considered.

Case 3: Incorrect PoE switch network cable is used. PoE devices have relatively high requirements on the quality of network cables, and the use of unqualified network cables will also lead to an unstable power supply. It is recommended to choose the network cable made of oxygen-free copper because the oxygen-free copper material has low resistance and a stable transmission effect. Cat5 and Cat6 network cable is advisable.
