How to choose a PoE power injector

Oct. 10, 2023

What is a PoE power supply? The PoE power supply is based on the power supply system of LAN (POL, Power over LAN) or Active Ethernet. It uses the latest standard specifications to transmit data and electrical power at the same time. The PoE power injector supply maintains the same standards as the existing Ethernet system and user compatibility. A relatively complete PoE system includes two parts: power supply equipment (PSE, Power Sourcing Equipment) and electrical terminal equipment (PD, Powered Device).

PROCET 105 PoE power injector

The PoE power injector supply mainly works by connecting to the powered device (PD) through network cables (Cat5e, Cat6, etc.). The standard PoE power supply complies with the PoE industry standards IEEE 802.3af, at, bt standards. When the PoE power supply and the powered device (PD) are connected, a "handshake protocol" will be performed through the intelligent detection chip. When the devices at both ends meet the same standard, the "handshake" can be successful, and the power supply device will provide power to the powered device. Otherwise, the PoE power supply does not supply power to ensure the safety of PD powered equipment.

How to choose a PoE power injector supply, taking a camera as an example, we have three reference options:

1.Number of cameras: For one camera, choose a single-port PoE power supply; for multiple cameras, choose a PoE power supply with the same data port.

2.Port PoE standard: The PoE standard of the PoE power supply must comply with the camera, 802.3af (PoE), 802.3at (PoE+) and 802.3bt (PoE++). Their corresponding maximum power supply sizes are 15.4W, 30W, 60W/ 100W respectively.

3.Power supply voltage: Make sure the operating voltage of the PoE power supply and the connected camera are consistent to avoid voltage overload or operation failure.
