There are many applications of PoE(Power over Ethernet) technology, including connecting network surveillance cameras, connecting wireless AP, etc. These surveillance cameras and wireless AP are called PD (Power Device), we mainly power the PD devices by connecting them to Switch. However, not all switches and PDs support the POE function. For different switches and PDs types, there are 4 PoE connection ways:

1. PoE Switch vs PoE PD

  This is the simplest connection method. Directly connect the PD to the PoE switch through a network cable to achieve power over ethernet. Here, in order to ensure the quality of the network cable, it is best to keep the network cable within 100 meters.

2. PoE Switch vs Non-PoE PD  

  In this case, we need to connect one PoE splitter before the PD. The PoE splitter will separate the Power+Data into data signals and power. There are two output cables in the splitter, one is the power output line, and the other is the data output line, then connect the 2 cables to the PD. The power output is 5V/9/12V, etc., which can match various non-PoE PDs, and support the IEEE 802.3af/802.3at standard.

3. Non-PoE Switch vs PoE PD

  In this case, we need to connect a PoE injector to the switch, the PoE injector will add power and data to one cable and transmit it to the PD. This solution is good to expand the original wiring network and has no impact on the original network.

4. Non-PoE Switch vs Non-PoE PD

  In this case, we need to connect one PoE injector to the switch and connect one PoE splitter before the PD. 

  Both cases 3 and 4 are suitable for the transformation of traditional networks, that is, the original switch is not a PoE switch, but wants to take advantage of the benefits of the PoE power supply.
