SFP Port and RJ45 Port Differences in PoE Switch

Mar. 29, 2022

Some customers may be familiar with SFP ports, they are often configured in PoE switches and other PoE power supply devices. But there are still be some customers who don't really understand what an SFP port is. Some questions are often asked like: What's the difference between an SFP optical port and an RJ45 port? Which one is better?

Differences between SFP port and RJ45 port in PoE Switch

FAQ 1. Is the SFP port an optical fiber port? Do they support Gigabit data speed?

The SFP port is an interface that realizes gigabit photoelectric signal conversion, and the maximum transmission rate can reach 1000Mbps (PROCET SFP port PoE switches and SFP PoE injectors support both 100 and 1000Mbps, self-adaptation). The SFP port is also known as a gigabit fiber port in the PoE industry.

FAQ 2. What is the difference between an SFP port and an RJ45 port?

The same point of the SFP port and the RJ45 port is that their maximum transmission rate is 1000Mbps, but their scene application and transmission distance are different. The SFP port on the PoE switch or PoE injector must be equipped with an SFP optical module and an optical fiber jumper to realize data transmission. While the RJ45 port can transport the data only through a CAT5E or CAT6 network cable. The maximum transmission distance of the network cable is 100 meters; while the maximum transmission distance of the SFP optical module connecting the fiber jumper combination is 50km, much further than the RJ45 port.

FAQ 3. What are the benefits of SFP ports?

The SFP port is a hot-swappable I/O interface (referring to the input/output interface) with high flexibility, plug & play, no need to set up, suitable for a variety of network devices, SFP port is backward compatible, supports 10/100/1000Mbps.
